The Menifee Police Department is in the process of creating a first rate Canine Unit. The primary role of the Canine Unit is to offer support services to the Operations Division. Canine officers will typically respond to alarm activation calls, requests for vehicle and building searches, and to track fleeing or barricaded suspects. A canine team is comprised of a police officer and a highly trained police service dog.
We have identified our first K-9 Handler, as Officer Quincy Mercado. Officer Mercado, along with experts in the field of canine training and operations, will help the Menifee Police Department, in the crucial selection of a service dog that will help our unit reach its full potential and help us best serve our community.
We expect Handler Mercado and her K-9 service dog to be patrol trained and operational by October 2020. We look forward to expanding this unit to more teams.
Stay tuned to see the exciting new developments.
